The Birthplace of Pétanque
Are you familiar with the sport called pétanque? Many of you may have heard of it, and some may even have had the chance to try it yourselves.
The other day, I took part in a local indoor pétanque tournament. The rules are very simple: the aim is to throw your ball as close as possible to a small target ball. It’s an inclusive, diversity-friendly sport that people of all ages, genders, and physical abilities can enjoy together. In the gymnasium, a wide range of participants—from preschool children to a 98-year-old woman (!)—gathered and enjoyed playing in their own way, creating a warm and friendly atmosphere.
Pétanque originated in the south of France. Its name comes from a dialect spoken in Provence, derived from “pieds tanqués,” meaning “feet together” when throwing. In France, it is common to see people gathering in parks, public squares, and even outside cafés, casually playing pétanque while enjoying conversation. Such scenes have become a part of everyday life.
Why not take the opportunity to experience the relaxed atmosphere of France for yourself, and enjoy some enriching time through pétanque?
