熱帯のペンギン
大学のキャンパスでペンギンを見るたびに、私は「ベトナムのペンギン」を思い出します。
といっても、本物ではありません。ペンギン型のゴミ箱です。ベトナム各地の公園で、彼らは今も大きな口を開けて立っています。灼熱の太陽の下、じっとゴミ待ち。あの姿を見ると、こちらもつい何かを放り込みたくなります。
初めて出会ったのは、もう30年近く前。その時点ですでに年季が入っていたので、彼らの渡越はさらに昔のことでしょう。それにしても、なぜペンギン。しかも、なぜあの時代に。
気になる理由は、もう一つあります。幼い頃、近鉄の駅でも同じようなペンギン型ゴミ箱を見かけました。あの駅のペンギンたちは、今どこへ。ご存じの方、ぜひご一報ください。
ちなみに、ベトナム語でペンギンは 「chim cánh cụt」。直訳すれば「羽の短い鳥」。つまり、飛べない鳥です。
飛べない理由を名前で言い切る潔さ。なかなかのものです。
「飛ばないペンギンは、ただのペンギンだ」――。
いえ、あの時代に誰よりも早くそこに立ち、私たちの日常を受け止めてくれた。あなたこそ、立派なファーストペンギンですよっ。

Tropical Penguins
Whenever I see a penguin on campus, I’m reminded of the “Vietnamese penguins.”
That said, they aren’t real. They’re penguin-shaped trash cans. In parks all over Vietnam, they still stand there with their big mouths wide open. Under the scorching sun, they wait patiently for trash. When I see them like that, I can’t help but feel like tossing something in myself.
I first came across them nearly 30 years ago. They already looked well-worn back then, so they must have arrived in Vietnam even longer ago. Still, why penguins? And why back then, of all times?
There’s another reason that’s been on my mind. When I was a child, I saw similar penguin-shaped trash cans at a Kintetsu station. Where are those station penguins now? If anyone knows, please let me know.
By the way, “chim cánh cụt” means “penguin” in Vietnamese. Literally translated, it means “bird with short wings.” In other words, a bird that can’t fly.
What a refreshingly straightforward way to state the reason they can’t fly right in their name. That’s quite something.
“A penguin that can’t fly is just a penguin”—.
No, you were the first to stand there, ahead of everyone else back in those days, embracing our daily lives. You, my friend, are the true “First Penguin”!
